How can I get from dark brown to light caramel at home? I'm tired of paying $$$$ at the salon!?

My hair is dark brown, and I go to the salon to have it lightened to caramel with blond highlights in the summer. I don't necessarily have to have highlights all year long, but I would like to be able to get my hair to a medium/light caramel by myself at home. Is there one product that will do this? Or do I have to lighten it first and then color it? If so, what do I use to lighten it?How can I get from dark brown to light caramel at home? I'm tired of paying $$$$ at the salon!?
